How to switch off notification emails

By default, in Confluence, Users are automatically added as Watchers to pages that they've collaborated on. There is, to date, at an admin level, no ways of disabling the notification emails when a page that you have contributed to has been modified.

However, I am hoping that with this little guide, it will be easy for any new user of this space to unsubscribe for these notification emails. This should be a quick two-step process.

What is 'Autowatch' and 'Watch pages'

Autowatch is a feature which will automatically add any pages and blog posts that you create, edit or comment on will be added to your watch list. By default autowatch is always on.

You can 'watch' a Confluence page, blog post or space. Confluence will then send you a notification email whenever anyone updates your watched content.

You'll receive email notifications for:

·       Page / blog post edits (unless the author clears the 'Notify watchers' check box).

·       Deletions.

·       Attachments, including new versions or deletions of an existing attachment.

·       Comments, including new comments or deletions of existing comments.

By default, Confluence will assign you as a watcher of any page or blog post that you create or edit. This behavior is called 'autowatch'.

There's no daily digest for email notifications. You'll receive immediate emails for important notifications (like mentions and new pages), but when lots of changes are being made at the same time, you'll only receive a single email with all the changes (within a 10 minute window).

You will not receive email notifications for content changes due to the output of a macro, because the page content itself hasn't been edited. We also don't send a notification when a comment is edited.

You need 'View' permission for the page, blog post or space to receive notifications.

How to switch off notification emails

From any page in the space, click on your icon at the top right of the page and select settings from the drop-down menu. (see pictures below).

Once on settings page, select email on the left of the page.

In the email settings page, click edit at the bottom of the options and unselect Autowatch (and any other options that you don’t want to have). Then click submit.

From the same settings page, at the top, click on the Watches page.

This page will show all the pages that you are already watching. For each page that you do not want to receive a notification email for, click on Stop Watching on the right of each page.

Once clicked Stop Watching should show as Start Watching.

Don’t click on it or you will start watching this page again.

Once you have stopped watching all pages, this ‘Watches’ page should look like below. You shouldn’t be receiving any notification emails. If you do, repeat the process with the new pages.
