Description technique

S-MAP is not a ground-based assessment of soils, useful for comparison, validation and additional data on soil, soil water and drought studies

Accuracy / Resolution

250m.

Benefits

  • Best ground-based soil map currently available at national scales.

Limitations

  • Might require additional mapping in the future for finer resolution.

Applicability for Northland

Currently the Northland region is currently waiting for S-Map coverage, which supersedes the Fundamental Soil Layers (FSL) dataset with national coverage. Generating meaningful results from a remote sensing centric assessment of soil characteristics would be very difficult due to the vegetative coverage of the majority of land area within the Northland region. As a result, it can be difficult to derive useful information without a substantial field data capture campaign, likely duplicating the effort of the ongoing Landcare to extend S-Map coverage.
